The Provocative Questions (PQ) Initiative encompasses six Requests for Applications (RFAs) of identical scientific scope.
Two RFAs for “Research Answers to NCI’s Provocative Questions” solicit new applications using the NIH R01 and R21 grant mechanisms.
Four RFAs for “Revision Applications to NCI-supported Awards to Include Research on the NCI's Provocative Questions” solicit revision (competitive supplement) applications for adding PQ-relevant research to active NCI R01, U01, P01, and P50 awards with at least two years remaining.
A matrix of overview information about the 6 PQ RFAs is provided below. Comprehensive submission information and instructions including page limits, responsiveness criteria, RFA-specific instructions, unique review criteria, and anticipated award information are detailed in each of the RFAs. It is essential that every applicant read the selected PQ RFA before preparing and submitting an application. Potential applicants who are interested in the PQ Initiative may use this table and the included links to respective individual RFAs as a quick “switchboard” to initially identify the most appropriate RFA. Applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the RFA scientific lead prior to submission.

1All FOAs allow Resubmission (A1) applications, but only for applications originally submitted to these RFAs and when the identical PQ is being addressed.
2Note that the budget for new R01 applications is not limited, but requested budgets at or above $500,000 direct costs/year must be extremely well justified. New/Resubmission R01 applications may request up to 5 years of support. New/Resubmission R21 applications and Revision R01, U01, P01, and P50 applications may request up to 2 years of support.
3Active NCI grant must have 2 years remaining
